Hi, everyone! My name is Yadeth and I’m from Cambodia. I’m studying a degree preparation course in Architecture at the University of Brighton International College.
When I finish, I’ll progress to the second year of an Architecture BA (Hons) degree at the University of Brighton. Let me tell you about my journey with Kaplan so far.
Why did I choose to study in Brighton?
I chose to study at the University of Brighton International College because of the fantastic support. The Student Support team is very helpful, and gives students the opportunity to get involved with activities and meet new people. The facilities are also great and students have access to these throughout their time at the College.
Brighton was very appealing to me because it’s a seafront city and has a good atmosphere. I have enjoyed exploring the city and learning about its history so far. I’m glad I chose to study here.
My experience as an Architecture student at the College
In the beginning, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to study Architecture because my interest lies in Interior Design. However, once I started studying Architecture at the College, my curiosity about the subject grew. I have enjoyed learning about buildings, their shapes and the matrix that Architects use to design them.
The International Year One course at the University of Brighton International College offers many research opportunities and projects that students can get involved with. For example, in the first term, I carried out some research in Brighton, London and other parts of the UK to learn more about what Architecture is and what buildings look like. This was so interesting!
In the last term, I learnt about design technologies, and using local materials, designed a children’s playground. After researching the local area, and its history, I realised there were no activities for kids. So, I decided to design an outdoor play area to give them something to do. I had so much fun doing this project and I can’t wait to do more!
Advice for international students
My advice to international students wanting to study abroad is to research the city and find out how to use the public transport system, where to buy a SIM card from and how to create a bank account. This will make the first few weeks abroad easier, and the Student Support Team can help you with this too.
And remember, you are not alone. Your tutors and classmates will always be there to help you along the way.
