At Kaplan, we believe in inclusion and equality for all, and our diverse student community represents the world we want to see. That’s why we’re asking them to share their thoughts on some of society’s most important topics with our ‘Student perspectives’ series.
Anxhela from Albania is a Student Ambassador who is studying a degree in Accounting and Finance at the University of Brighton. Here, she answers the question ‘why is mental health important?’ and shares some advice for coping with difficult situations.
What do we mean by mental health?
Mental health is all about emotions, thoughts, feelings, and our social and psychological wellbeing. The way we think and feel controls our attitude towards others and makes us behave in a certain way in different situations.
Being mentally healthy is a necessity for people of every age, so that they can feel good and live their lives in the best possible way.
Why is mental health important?
Mental health is just as important as physical health, and in order to participate actively in your everyday life, you need to take care of both.
These two aspects of your wellbeing are closely linked, and poor mental health can even lead to physical illnesses developing. For example, conditions such as depression can increase the risk of many other diseases, including heart disease, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes.
It’s important to take care of our mental wellbeing by being aware of our thoughts, feelings, and emotional responses to our surroundings and circumstances.

How can we take care of our mental health?
As a university student, I am learning to stand on my own two feet, so a healthy mind helps me face everything that comes my way. It’s key for me feel good emotionally and physically to cope with everything from my studies and my part-time job to homesickness.
Based on my personal experience, every time I feel like I cannot do something, I take a step back and think about it. I ask myself: is it worth doing it? How will I benefit if I do not give up? This mindset helps me deal with any issues I face while building up my resilience by asking more of myself.
My advice for everyone is to take it easy when you don’t feel okay, and always stop and take a deep breath.
In addition, being able to express what you are going through is the best way to deal with many mental illnesses. Reaching out to someone you trust is the first thing we should all do if we feel down or unable to handle a situation.
Sometimes we need to remember how important it is for all of us to feel good inside and help others feel good about themselves too.
My role as a Wellbeing Co-ordinator
Mental health is important for people of all ages, and especially for students who are under 18 years old. They are just about to start living their life independently and they might need someone who has been in their shoes to guide, advise and support them.
As an Under-18s Wellbeing Co-ordinator at the Kaplan Living Brighton student residence, I can help students with their issues so that they feel more confident in themselves. I love doing this job because it feels great to be able to support others!
Finally, I would like to say that our mental health should always be our priority, so that we can face all that life throws our way.
