5 tips for studying at home and online

With recent global events affecting the way we go about our daily lives, you might have had to make some changes to the way you study. A lot of teaching has moved online, and you may be finding it challenging to adjust to this, so we’ve compiled some tips to help you adapt to the change and with studying at home.

Top tips for studying at home

1. Try and work next to natural light

You might not be spending as much time outside as you were, so it’s important to find as much daylight as you can even when you’re indoors.

Natural light can brighten your mood, and it’s been proven to increase concentration and focus. So, when you study at home, try and set up your desk by a window and soak up some vitamin D.

2. Stay hydrated and healthy 

It takes time to get used to a new routine, so you might find yourself forgetting to drink as much water or eat your fruit and vegetables every day. Not only are things like fruits, vegetables, nuts and water healthy for your body, they’ll keep your mind functioning properly too.

3. Make time to relax

Just like you have breaks when you’re at school or college, it’s important to put some time to relax into your diary when you’re studying at home. Your mind needs to switch off from time to time, so taking regular breaks from your books is very good for your mental health.

You could watch your favourite TV show, call your friends and family, play a video game, listen to a podcast or spend some time on a hobby. You’ll feel re-energised afterwards and ready to return to your studies with fresh eyes.

4. Get up and dressed like you’re going outside

Even if you’re not going to class, it’s still a good idea to shower and get ready for the day as if you are. This will help you to feel mentally ready for studying at home because you’ll be in the right frame of mind to focus on your studies. If you stay in your pyjamas all day, you’re unlikely to feel motivated or productive!

5. Make the most of technology

Technology has never been as advanced as it is now, and you can take advantage of it when it comes to studying at home.

If you have a group project to complete, why not schedule a video call to get everyone together online? It will help you feel more connected to see your tutors’ and classmates’ faces, and you’re more likely to be inspired to contribute to the group effort.
