Studying abroad in the USA has been such an incredible journey. Along with discovering a new culture and meeting people from all over the world, I have become so much more independent!
Keep reading to learn more about my journey from Kenya to Simmons University in Boston, and how it helped me be more self-sufficient.
Starting a new journey
Studying abroad isn’t just about attending classes in a foreign country — it’s about embarking on an incredible adventure that feels like a fresh start.
The anticipation and excitement of this new chapter in my life were evident from the moment I set foot on the plane. Leaving behind the familiar, I was ready to embrace the unknown and all the opportunities it held.
Learning more about myself
One of the aspects I love most about studying abroad is the opportunity it provides for self-discovery. When you’re in a new place, far from the support system you’re used to, you learn to rely on yourself in ways you never imagined. It’s a time to fully be yourself and immerse yourself into the things you love most.
I found that I had the freedom to pursue my passions and interests without any preconceived notions or expectations from others. Whether it was joining a local club, exploring the city’s vibrant cultural scene, or simply taking long walks to soak in the atmosphere, I discovered new facets of myself.

The excitement of traveling
Traveling has always been a dream of mine, and studying abroad gave me the perfect excuse to chase that dream. Every weekend felt like a mini adventure!
I explored nearby cities, tried exotic foods, and encountered people from diverse backgrounds. It was a chance to do things on my own and learn valuable life skills like budgeting, planning, and problem-solving.
One of the most significant benefits of studying abroad was the opportunity to travel independently. Whether it was navigating unfamiliar public transportation systems, booking accommodations, or communicating with people who spoke a different language, each experience was a lesson in self-reliance. These challenges taught me to adapt quickly and build confidence in my abilities.
