My experience studying Pharmacy at the University of Brighton

James from Nigeria completed a Kaplan Foundation Certificate in Science and Engineering and is now studying a Pharmacy degree at the University of Brighton. In this blog, he shares his journey and experience of studying Pharmacy at the University.

What I enjoy about studying Pharmacy

My decision to study Pharmacy stemmed from a deep passion for healthcare and a desire to make a difference in people’s lives. The role of a Pharmacist is crucial in ensuring patient safety and managing medications effectively, and I knew I wanted to be part of that.

Studying Pharmacy has been a journey filled with both challenges and rewarding experiences. It is dynamic and engaging, combining theoretical knowledge with practical applications.

One aspect I enjoy most on the degree is the hands-on experience we get in the labs. So far, I’ve had the opportunity to create tablets, capsules, suppositories, and nasal sprays as part of my lab work. Conducting experiments has not only deepened my understanding of the subject, but also equipped me with valuable skills that will be essential in my career.

Academic challenges

The academic challenges in a Pharmacy degree are demanding, yet incredibly rewarding. The curriculum is rigorous, covering a range of subjects, from Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry to Patient Care and Ethics.

Balancing lab work, lectures and assignments has helped me develop strong time management skills. Though the workload can feel overwhelming, especially during exams, these challenges have helped me grow. They have taught me the importance of staying organised. The support from both professors and peers has been crucial in making tough times manageable and rewarding.

University facilities

The facilities at the University are excellent, particularly in the School of Applied Sciences, where we have access to state-of-the-art labs that reinforce our learning through practical sessions.

One of the highlights is the SimMan 3G — a highly advanced patient simulator that allows us to practice our clinical skills. This includes administering medications, monitoring vital signs, detecting signs of diseases — all in real time! In addition, I have had the opportunity to gain work experience in a local pharmacy, which was instrumental in a real-world context.

How the International College prepared me for university

Life at the University of Brighton International College was a mix of thrilling adventures and obstacles. I had the opportunity to meet new people, explore different campus activities, and familiarise myself with the local area. However, finding a balance between having a social life and academics eventually made it a smooth journey.

The Extended Project module at the College enhanced my research, presentation, and writing skills, which are important for lab reports and essays. The tutors’ approaches and the exam structure matched those at university, making the transition to undergraduate studies easier.

Finally, the University’s Careers and Employability team, through it’s association with UBIC, helped me earn a volunteering opportunity with the National Heath Service (NHS).

My time at the International College played a pivotal part in preparing me for university, and my experience at the University of Brighton has been fulfilling. I’m excited for what the future holds!
