What is a special program at UConn?
UConn’s special pre-professional programs are intended for high-achieving undergraduate students seeking a career in medicine, dentistry or law.
UConn has three special programs:
- Special Program in Medicine
- Special Program in Dental Medicine
- Special Program in Law
Taken alongside any of UConn’s undergraduate majors, once completed, students have the option to enroll in one of UConn’s affiliated graduate schools.
When you join a special program at UConn, you’ll enjoy one-on-one support to prepare you for the challenges of a graduate school program and career in medicine, dentistry or law. Opportunities include unique programming events, taking courses with graduate school professors, and mentorship from practicing doctors or lawyers.

- A separate application is required for these highly competitive special programs.
- To be considered, applicants must meet a higher GPA requirement and apply by November 15.
- Once admitted, no extra tuition fees are charged.

Pre-professional special program options at UConn
There are three different pre-professional special programs at UConn, each of which requires a separate application. See which option may be the best fit for you below.
OPTION 1
Special Program in Medicine
For qualified undergraduate students who want to start building valuable experiences on their path to medical school and becoming a medical doctor. Students earn a bachelor’s degree and a Doctor of Medicine (DM), with four years of undergraduate education and four years of medical education.
OPTION 2
Special Program in Dental Medicine
For qualified undergraduate students who wish to gain skills, mentorship and experience before applying to dental school. Students earn a bachelor’s degree and a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD), with four years of undergraduate education and four years of medical education.
OPTION 3
Special Program in Law
For qualified undergraduate students who hope to build a strong foundation for law school and a career as a lawyer. Students earn a bachelor’s degree and a Juris Doctor (JD), with four years of undergraduate education and three years of law education.
