How studying with Kaplan set me up for a career in sustainable water management

Rustam from Azerbaijan studied a Foundation Certificate at Kaplan International College (KIC) London ahead of progressing a Law degree at the University of Westminster. Since graduating in 2019, he has embarked on an exciting career in sustainability and international diplomacy.

Here’s how Kaplan and the University of Westminster set him for a successful career.

What was it about KIC London that made you want to study there?

One of the main reasons I chose to study at KIC London was the rich history and tradition of British educational institutions in providing a world-class education.

I hoped that studying a Foundation Certificate at KIC London would enhance my academic skills and help me reach the level needed to gain entry to the degree I wanted to study. I knew that if I passed my Foundation Certificate with the right grades then I would be guaranteed progression into the University of Westminster and my chosen degree.

I was also drawn to the UK’s multicultural atmosphere. I knew that British universities are very diverse, with students and staff from around the world, so I’d have the opportunity to meet people from many different backgrounds.

Through studying at KIC London and progressing to a London-based UK university, you can develop strong business connections that grow your professional network and improve your career prospects. I knew these connections would provide access to opportunities that might not be available elsewhere.

What were the advantages of studying Law at the University of Westminster in particular?

Firstly, the programme I chose, European Legal Studies LLB at Westminster, was unique. In addition to offering three years of legal studies, it provided the opportunity to study abroad for one year as an Erasmus exchange student. This programme helped to improve my CV further and enhance my career prospects.

Secondly, studying at Westminster was both enriching and advanced. The staff were always there to help me develop my legal skills and give helpful guidance on my career path.

The Career Development Centre at the University was top-notch. Their assistance helped me improve my CV and cover letter and successfully secure legal placements during the second and fourth years of my studies. My personal tutor and dissertation supervisor were always happy to support my academic journey and share valuable feedback.

You’re now Chief Advisor of the Azerbaijani State Water Resources Agency. What do you enjoy most about this role?

I never would have thought that I would switch my career path from the legal sector to a public health-related job. My current role as Chief Advisor at the Water and Amelioration Scientific Research Institute PLE under the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency focuses mainly on applying scientific research and new technologies in water management and sustainability.

What I enjoy most about my role is being part of the planning team for large events, both locally and internationally. In March, I had the opportunity to play a significant role in organising Baku Water Week 2024 and preparing for the upcoming COP29 side events in November in Baku, Azerbaijan. The upcoming 2025 Baku Water Week promises to be even more innovative and will provide new solutions for enhancing water cooperation and public engagement.

5 things to know about studying abroad in the UK

Although I am no longer working directly in the legal sector, many aspects of my work involve legal elements. I am currently engaged in international diplomacy, strategic communication to attract new global partners, strengthening existing relationships to achieve the agency’s goals, and coordinating activities within our organisation.

Additionally, I am involved in various projects, such as the desalination of the Caspian Sea and the reuse of rain and wastewater. These projects involve negotiating contracts and signing legal documents — areas in which my legal background has been very important over the past three months.

Tell us more about you winning the Employability Award while studying!

Winning the University of Westminster’s highest Employability Gold Award was perhaps my most significant achievement during my studies in London.

I was engaged as an English teacher in a summer school in Tallinn, Estonia, and served as a mentor for new students, worked as a caseworker at the Citizens Advice Bureau, acted as a course representative, student ambassador, president of the ELSA Westminster society, and conducted telephone research for higher education surveys. These opportunities gave me a unique set of skills, which I have successfully applied in my current role.

Obtaining a Law degree does not necessarily mean that one must work as an advocate or at the bar — it’s not just for lawyers! It equips graduates with skills that are valuable in other sectors as well. For example, the negotiation skills I gained during my Law degree have been crucial in my current job for connecting with new partners and successfully extending our partnerships.

One notable example is my participation in World Water Week from August 25–29 in Stockholm, Sweden, where I helped establish a relationship between the Stockholm International Water Institute and the Water and Amelioration Scientific Research Institute, leading to fruitful developments for our institution and the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency.

What’s next for you?

Next, I plan to pursue doctoral studies in Artificial Intelligence and Law and take a short course in water diplomacy and cooperation. I also plan to teach Law at local universities to share my legal and practical knowledge with prospective students and apply my water diplomacy knowledge both in Azerbaijan and globally. I am always eager to learn and discover new innovative ideas, and I strive to make the most of my time by staying busy and productive.
