My name is Mehriban and I’m from Azerbaijan, studying Microbiology at Arizona State University (ASU).
Phoenix is a very friendly place. The people here are extremely nice and ready to help you whenever you need. On top of that, there are many beautiful places that you can visit cheaply, or even for free!
So, if you’re an international student planning to study at ASU, here are my six favorite places in Phoenix to visit on a budget.
1. Tempe Town Lake
Tempe Town Lake is one of my favorite places to visit — especially at night with my friends. There are lots of scooters and boats that you can use to explore the area. It’s got a wonderful atmosphere, making it a great place to take walks and have picnics with friends. I go there at least once a week!
2. Fashion Square
If you like shopping, or even just walking around and doing some window shopping, head to Fashion Square. It’s located in Scottsdale, and there’s a wide range of stores and restaurants to grab food and relax with your friends. Their boba teas are amazing, so I always get one when I go there.
3. Heard Museum
For anyone who is interested in history, this place is a must-visit! I’d recommend booking a tour, as this means you see everything that the Heard Museum has to offer. There’s also a pretty outdoor garden where you can go and take in some fresh air. It’s a very beautiful, minimalistic space — you can take some really nice pictures here!

4. Desert Botanical Garden
And if you prefer the outdoors and enjoy looking at plants, the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix is the place for you. I really like relaxing here after all my midterms are done. As we all know, plants are a great way to unwind. So, if you’re feeling a bit stressed due to your studies, seeing all this natural beauty can bring you some peace. It’s also a great location for all ages, so be sure to bring your family when they visit and make some unforgettable memories!
5. “A” Mountain
I love hiking “A” Mountain! It’s conveniently right next to ASU’s Tempe campus, so you and your friends can get there very easily. My favourite time to go there is right after sunset, because you can see all of Phoenix with its lights. It’s like the whole city is under your toes! Plus, it’s also a good form of exercise, so you have the dual benefit of hanging out with friends and looking after your health.
6. Waterfall trail
This is another hike you can do — and at the end of the trail, you’ll see an amazing waterfall! The best time to go is during the monsoon season, because that’s when the water is at its most powerful. If you like waterfalls, you can’t miss this place!
