My name is Dariga and I’m from Kazakstan. I’m currently studying a bachelor’s degree in International Business Management at the University of Bristol.
As I prepare to graduate this year, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and accomplishment. Choosing to study here was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I’ve never regretted it.
If you’re thinking about embarking on the same journey, here are some of the reasons why Bristol is a great place to study.
High-quality education
When it came to selecting a university, the University of Bristol stood out to me. The University consistently ranks among the top global institutions, placing 55th in the world and top 10 in the UK (QS World University Guide 2024). Its prestigious reputation is undeniable — students are guaranteed a high-quality education here.
Diverse student community
As an international student, I also paid attention to the cultural diversity of the city and the campus community. The campus, nestled in the heart of the city, exudes a charm that instantly captivated me. From the iconic Wills Memorial Building to the lush greenery of Royal Fort Gardens and modern facilities, it combines the past and future, with an amazing atmosphere of inspiration and innovation.
For those unfamiliar with the University of Bristol, I would describe it as a dynamic hub of learning and creativity, offering a lot of opportunities for personal growth and pursuing your passions. Building a social life at Bristol is not as difficult as you may expect at first, as the University offers many extracurricular activities, clubs, societies, and social events throughout the year. There are many chances to connect with like-minded individuals and forge meaningful connections.

Incredibly safe
Safety is one of the important aspects concerning many students and their parents, and from my personal experience, the University of Bristol provided me with a sense of security in a foreign country. The campus is equipped with ample security measures and there is a responsive support system available to assist students in times of need.
How I started my journey with Kaplan
My journey to Bristol began with applying through Kaplan to study the University’s International Foundation Programme (IFP) at the on-campus Centre for Academic Language and Development. It played a crucial role in preparing me for my International Business Management degree. Along with giving me the necessary academic skills, it also helped me adjust to the UK’s education system, which differs from the one in Kazakhstan.
Studying here, you’re encouraged to think independently and critically from the very beginning. There are all kinds of support available, such as personal tutors, careers advice, workshops, webinars, and of course the library!
As for my favourite class, one that stands out is Brands and Cultural Strategy. The engaging lectures, thought-provoking discussions, and hands-on projects made it a truly enriching experience, and I gained valuable insights that have shaped my academic journey and future career choices.
My advice to other international students
If you’re planning to study in the UK, there may be some things that surprise you, such as the great diversity of accents across the country. There is also the inexplicable obsession with discussing the weather and the British love affair with tea, which is very similar to the Kazakh one.
As I approach the end of my academic journey, my advice to others would be to remember the importance of time management. Practicing self-care and finding balance in all life spheres is so important, as it makes things less challenging and supports your wellbeing.
Make sure you embrace every opportunity. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and make the most of your time here! University is a time for growth, discovery, transformations and challenges, so let the University of Bristol be your guide to a future brimming with endless possibilities.
