My experience studying Media Production at Bournemouth University

Qin from China studied a Foundation Certificate for Media and Communications at Bournemouth University International College. She is now studying a bachelor’s degree in Media Production at Bournemouth University (BU).

In this blog, Qin shares her experience as a Media Production student at BU, covering key modules, projects, career preparation, and advice for future international students.

Engaging modules

The Media Production degree at Bournemouth University offers a variety of modules. For example, in the Digital Film and Audio Production modules, we explore everything from sound design to documentary filmmaking, allowing us to study a broad range of areas.

In the Audio Production module, the main task was creating a podcast, where we learn to distinguish between different types of sounds. This was an area I hadn’t explored before, but through this module, I’m gradually learning how to craft a story using sound. The Audio Production module is unique, especially compared to other visual forms of storytelling.

I’m also interested in roles like editing, shooting, and directing in filmmaking. The Digital Film module enables me to take on these different roles, from editor to cinematographer, and immerse myself in the process of story creation. This module helps me gain a deeper understanding of the media industry.

Practical learning

The Centre for Excellence in Media Practice (CEMP) is a research centre within the Faculty of Media & Communication at Bournemouth University. As a result, the University offers exceptional facilities, resources and opportunities, which was a key reason why I decided to study here.

Thanks to the research centre, I have many opportunities to practice and develop my skills. For example, after completing my audio project, I used various sound recording studios in the Weymouth building.

The Poole Gateway Building also has professional editing studios and production equipment like TASCAM recorders, Canon cameras, and sound recording equipment for students to use. Students also have free access to Adobe software including Photoshop, Premiere and Audio, which media students can download onto their laptops.

These facilities and resources have improved my efficiency and made my workflow more manageable.

Impactful projects

As a media student, creating different media projects has helped me adapt to different media production processes. For example, in the Digital Media Design module, my team and I designed an app that aimed to help users overcome sleep disorders.

While designing this app, I focused on considering users’ needs and how to address their issues. As a designer, this shifted my focus to prioritise both simplicity and an aesthetically pleasing design. Ultimately, I created an animated video using artificial intelligence to promote healthy sleeping habits, which helped me further develop my media skills.

Preparing for the media industry

I have been studying at Bournemouth University for a year and have gained valuable knowledge and professional skills. For example, in the Understanding Media module, I’ve researched both traditional media and digital media. This module has helped me understand various types of media and their significance in our lives, which will help me as a future Media Producer.

On the Media Production degree, we also learn scriptwriting, bridging the gap between audio, film, and digital media design. This has given me the opportunity to work with software like Audio, Premier, Photoshop, and professional media equipment.

This degree has given me the skills and confidence to adapt to different media environments in the future.

Students also learn about the media industry’s evolution, from traditional companies to digital platforms. As an international student, understanding global media trends is invaluable for my career. This means I can make informed career decisions by analysing the global media industry.

In the future, my goal is to become a Digital Media Producer. After completing my undergraduate degree, I plan to pursue a Master’s in Digital Media Design. This will allow me to explore various roles in the industry, gain valuable skills, and build a strong foundation for a career in digital media production.
