Ranked in the top 10 most beautiful campuses in Britain (The Telegraph), the University of Birmingham is a truly special place to study.
The University is a member of the Russell Group and was founded more than 100 years ago. Its 250-acre Edgbaston campus, which lies 4.8 kilometres south-west of Birmingham’s city centre, reflects this sense of history.
At the heart of the campus is the ‘Old Joe’ clock tower, which is the largest freestanding clock tower in the world. The tower’s official name is the Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, in honour of the University’s first Chancellor.
Other original buildings include the domed, red-brick Aston Webb building which houses the Great Hall. It forms a semi-circle around Chancellor’s Court, a central point for the whole the University of Birmingham campus.

One of the campus’ main highlights is the Barber Institute of Fine Arts. Home to an impressive collection of works by famous artists such as Van Gogh, Monet and Picasso, it is a great place to take friends and family when they visit!
You can broaden your horizons at the University’s excellent observatory, which was built in the 1980s and is located 8 kilometres south of the Edgbaston campus. During winter there are events at the observatory, including talks with members of the university’s Astronomical Society and the chance to use telescopes to observe the night sky.
The Edgbaston campus has all the facilities of a small town with everything you need from cafés and bars to banks and shops. The city centre is easily accessible and can be reached in 8 minutes by train — it is the only university campus in mainland Britain to have its own railway station.
The grounds boast plenty of green spaces with walkways, lawns and trees providing wonderful areas to study outdoors or simply to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. You’ll also enjoy the monthly farmers’ market, which offers a range of delicious locally sourced food.
History is an important part of the campus, but there is also a strong focus on moving into the future: £1 million per week is invested in the campus and goes towards improving facilities, such as modern laboratories, state-of-the-art performance venues and libraries.
Contemporary architecture such as the Muirhead Tower also provides an interesting contrast to the iconic buildings of the past.
