The power of a Medical Microbiology degree from Arizona State University

Mehriban from Azerbaijan is in the third year of her Microbiology (Medical Microbiology), BS degree at Arizona State University (ASU).

With the University’s commitment to innovation and impact, Microbiology students benefit from first-class hands-on learning that prepares them for careers in a variety of fields!

In this blog post, Mehriban reflects on her journey through this exciting degree program, as well as what other international students following in her footsteps can expect.

Why I chose Microbiology

Growing up in a medical environment with two parents who are doctors profoundly influenced my decision to pursue a degree in Medical Microbiology. This upbringing sparked my curiosity about the role of microorganisms in health and disease, and instilled in me a sense of responsibility and empathy towards patients.

Witnessing the impact of microbiology on healthcare firsthand inspired me to contribute meaningfully to advancements in medicine through rigorous scientific inquiry and continuous learning.

The benefits of hands-on learning

The program’s curriculum, coupled with hands-on laboratory work, has provided me with a deep understanding of microorganisms’ roles in human health. Through these lab experiences, I’ve been able to learn theoretical concepts and develop practical skills in microbiological techniques, such as culturing and identifying microorganisms.

Overall, medical field education at ASU is high-quality, with a comprehensive curriculum and passionate professors. Students benefit from modern labs, research opportunities, and strong academic support services, creating the perfect platform for careers in healthcare and biotechnology. The program’s emphasis on practical skills and real-world applications gives you a competitive edge on the job market and helps you make meaningful contributions in your chosen field!

Goals for the future

After graduating from university, my plan is to gain work experience in the healthcare or biotechnology industry, leveraging my dual major in Medical Microbiology and Neuroscience. I aim to apply my knowledge and skills in research, analysis, and problem-solving in a professional setting, contributing to advancements in healthcare and scientific discovery.

Following this, I intend to pursue a master’s degree program in either Biostatistics or Genetic Engineering. These fields align closely with my interests and career aspirations, offering opportunities to delve deeper into data analysis, experimental design, and molecular biology techniques.
