Top tips for joining the University of York International Pathway College

Studying at the University of York International Pathway College is a great adventure. You’ll discover a new culture and meet people from around the world — all while embarking on an exciting academic journey that ends with a degree from a Russell Group university!

To help you prepare for your first week at the Pathway College, we’ll take you through what to expect.

Get pre-arrival support before you land

Before leaving your home country, Kaplan will provide you with important pre-arrival support. This includes help with applying for your visa and finding accommodation that suits you.

If you like, we’ll arrange to meet you at the airport. Kaplan’s International Pathway College’s arrivals team can meet you there and take you directly to your accommodation! If you’d prefer to use your own transport, please give your arrival details by completing the online pre-arrival form.

“Before coming here, I was sent information packs and tips on how to get started with my new life in the UK. I was also told what to bring and this was very helpful.”

Access support services

At York, you’ll have more than just a room — there’s a support system in place at your residence to ensure you feel comfortable. Various members of staff are there to look after your wellbeing.

You can also make use of the Pathway College’s dedicated Student Support Service. This could include having a friendly member of staff to talk to, a confidential service, or mental health and wellbeing resources.

The staff gave me an emergency number when I arrived during the night to guide me to my accommodation. This was reassuring because I had not heard of a college doing this before.”

Explore your campus

When you arrive on campus, it’s natural to be a little overwhelmed. After all, it’s a big place! There are various facilities to explore, from the library to Campus East’s state-of-the-art Sports Centre.

To help you familiarise yourself with your new surroundings, the Pathway College offers campus tours to new students. You’ll be shown where your classes are, along with where you can relax during the evenings. It’s also a great chance to make friends with other students!

Embrace Welcome Week!

After you’ve arrived at the Pathway College, you can settle into life in York during Welcome Week. It’s an ideal opportunity to meet other people, as well as join clubs and societies that interest you.

You can also use the existing support services to get help with anything you need, such as registering with a doctor or opening a UK bank account. So, don’t hesitate to reach out to them!

“Welcome Week allowed me to meet new people and make new friends. It also provided me with a stepping stone to university.”

Work with your classmates

Your classes will usually be teacher-led, and you can take notes and work independently. You’ll also have tutorials, which take place in smaller groups and are more interactive. They give you the chance to ask questions, discuss certain topics in detail, and improve your collaboration skills.

You may be a little worried about your first class at the University of York International Pathway College. But don’t fear! It’s all part of the student experience, and you’ll always have your classmates with you. Before you know it, you’ll feel right at home.
