University of Alberta Year One Foundation Program
When you join the University of Alberta’s Year One Foundation Program, you’ll be a U of A student from day one. You’ll receive the academic support that sets you up to enter a bachelor’s degree program in your second year and get a “soft landing” to studying in Canada!
What is the Year One Foundation Program?
The University of Alberta’s Year One Foundation Program is the first year of a four-year bachelor’s degree. It’s designed for students who have course deficiencies, meaning they don’t yet meet the academic entry requirements for their chosen degree program. When you successfully complete the program, you’ll progress straight into the second year without losing any time on your way to graduation!

To qualify for the University of Alberta Year One Foundation Program, you’ll need:
- IELTS of 6.0 (at least 5.5 in all skills)
- High school completion with good grades, equivalent to 70% in the Canadian curriculum*
Don’t currently meet these entry requirements? No problem — you may be able to join the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program.
*Your exact required academic grades will depend on your country and degree program.
Your Year One Foundation Program options
The Year One Foundation Program offers progression to bachelor’s degree programs in six faculties.
You’ll study on the U of A’s North Campus ahead of entering the second year on the same campus. You also have the option to progress to a bachelor’s degree at the U of A’s Augustana campus.
