You’re a full U of A student when you enrol in the Year One Foundation Program, so you can use all of the university’s support services. This includes mental health support, career guidance, gym access, advice about specific faculties and programs, and much more!

Academic support services
You can benefit from personalized academic support throughout your time at the University of Alberta. Whether you want some extra help with writing essays, researching, or understanding course material, the U of A’s personalized support services will help you get the most out of your studies.
International student support
U of A provides tailored support to international students through its International Service Centre (ISC). The ISC’s team of licensed immigration consultants and student advisors can offer guidance on:
- study permits, work permits and visas
- emergency funding
- health insurance
- orientation
Subject area support
If you need support with your studies, the U of A’s Education Student Services is on hand to give you guidance. The team can connect you with academic support and work with you to make a plan that suits your specific studies.
Writing support
If you need it, you can get extra help with your essay writing during your studies. The Academic Success Centre, located on the North Campus, gives you access to free high-quality writing support from experienced peer tutors and professional writing advisors. They can provide a range of writing support services, such as:
- online and in-person academic support appointments
- workshops to help you develop specific writing skills
- group writing sessions to work on your writing in a supportive environment
- professional editing services that will help make your writing clearer
U of A personal and health support services
Along with getting academic support, it’s also important that you feel happy and safe while studying at the University of Alberta. To make sure you get the help you need, Kaplan and the U of A both offer resources and services designed to support your mental and physical wellbeing.
Counselling services
At the U of A, student wellbeing is a top priority. Through the university’s Counselling & Clinical Services, you can access free and confidential mental health support whenever you may need it. The university has a team of mental health specialists who can provide person-centered care throughout your time on campus.
Health services
The University Health Centre is your dedicated healthcare facility during your time at the U of A. You can schedule routine check-ups with them, or just visit whenever you’re feeling unwell. Their team is always on hand to provide the medical advice and care that you need.
Campus safety
At the U of A, you can have peace of mind that your campus environment is secure. The university’s Protective Services (UAPS) is always on hand to provide general patrol and incident response. You can also make use of Safewalk — a free service for when you’re travelling around the campus at night. You can arrange for a Safewalk volunteer to walk with you with so you’re not on your own.

Live events
The University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) hosts all kinds of events throughout the academic year. This includes live music, trivia nights, orientation events, and much more!
Student organizations
Joining a student organization is a great way to meet other students and make memories. With over 450 groups to choose from, you’ll be sure to find something that interests you.
Organized sports
Taking part in club sports is an opportunity to meet new people and look after your wellbeing. There are 20+ club sports to choose from! If playing sports isn’t your thing, you can always cheer on the Golden Bears and Pandas during basketball and hockey games, football matches, and more. As a U of A student, you can attend these events for free!
