University of Connecticut English preparation
If you’ve received a conditional offer to study at UConn, you can join UConn’s American English Language Institute (UCAELI) to improve your English. Once you’ve completed your UCAELI program, you can progress to your chosen degree program.
What is UCAELI?
If you have a conditional offer to study a degree at UConn, you can join the College Preparatory Experience at UConn’s American English Language Institute (UCAELI). The Institute is based on the main campus in Storrs, so you’ll be part of the UConn community from the day you arrive.
At UCAELI, you’ll benefit from small class sizes and a curriculum designed for international students. You’ll be able to connect with native English speakers, and may have the opportunity to enroll in University courses for credit.

To qualify for the College Preparatory Experience at UConn’s American English Language Institute, you will need to meet the following requirements:
- hold a high school diploma
- have a conditional offer to study at UConn
You must also have intermediate-to-advanced English language skills. You will take a placement assessment before you start the program to determine your proficiency and the length of your session.
Types of English preparation programs at UConn
You have two options for English preparation, both at UCAELI on the Storrs campus.
OPTION 1
College Preparatory Experience (6 weeks)
For students who have a conditional offer for a degree at UConn, with more advanced English proficiency.
OPTION 2
College Preparatory Experience (15 weeks)
For students who have a conditional offer at UConn and need additional English language development to begin their degree program.
