University of Alberta English preparation
If you don’t currently meet the entry requirements for the University of Alberta Year One Foundation Program, you may be able to join the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. You’ll get all the support you need to improve your English and academic skills ahead of joining the U of A community!
What is the EAP program?
The U of A’s English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program helps you develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. You’ll be taught at the English Language School by U of A instructors and benefit from an active, student-centred approach. After completing the program, you’ll be eligible for admission to the Year One Foundation Program — the first year of your chosen four-year bachelor’s degree.
Depending on your English-language level, you’ll be enrolled in the EAP program for four to six months.

To qualify for the four-month English for Academic Purposes program, you’ll need a minimum IELTS band score of 5.5 with no band below 5.0.
For students who need an extra two months of English preparation, the required IELTS band score is 5.0 with no band below 4.5.
A closer look at the U of A’s EAP program
There are two different EAP courses available, depending on your current English language level. Learn more about each option below.

- 2-month program offered in November, March and July with progression to the EAP 136 course
- 16.25 hours of instruction/week
- 18 students/class
OPTION 2
EAP 136
- 4-month program offered in September, January and May
- Orientation scheduled during first week of class
- 20 hours of instruction/week
- 18 students/class
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: lecture hours
